Professor Chan Kwok-bun, Chair Professor of Sociology, and his students spent two years writing the book My Family, My Home which was published this April. It features a collection of 11 essays by his undergraduate and postgraduate students on families in Hong Kong and Mainland China. The authors are Tobey Yung, Maurice Choi, Joyce Chan, Wong Siu-sing, Ho Ka-chun, Tsang Mei-wah, Ada Lee, Loy Tse, Eva Yu, Vivien Chan and Peggy Kung. The introduction by Professor Chan was entitled “Mainland and Hong Kong families in the eyes of young people”.

 

The authors had completed their Honours Projects and MPhil Theses under Professor Chan’s guidance at different times during the past 7 years and reworked these into essays for the book. They applied various theoretical perspectives and experimented with diverse methodologies to explore the multiple facets of families. These include the role of men and women in the family, the relationship between father and son, family in the eyes of young people, and the equality of men and women in Shanghai families.

 

At a celebration dinner recently, Professor Franklin Luk, Vice-President (Academic), praised Professor Chan for dedicating time and effort in working with his students to ponder social problems and bring the research results to publication.

 

Professor Chan said: “Through this book I hope to let people know that the most brilliant students in our Sociology Department are on par with those from world famous universities. I cherish the opportunity to publish this book with my students and hope this type of teacher-student collaboration can be passed down from generation to generation.”

 

社會學系講座教授陳國賁教授與學生合作，籌備兩年，於今年四月出版《吾家吾園 – 中港家庭的社會學研究》。書中輯錄陳教授過去七年指導過的十一名本科生或碩士生的畢業論文。同學將理論結合實踐，以敏銳的社會學觸覺來剖析變遷社會中的家庭生活，力圖通過活生生的個案來思考現代家庭生活的內在特徵與矛盾，並進而反思現代家庭生活中的情感疏離和文化迷思。

 

陳教授為該書作引言「青年人眼中的『內地及香港』家庭」。十一篇文章分別是容慧明的「上海家庭的男女平等」、蔡國滔的「男主內，女主外？」、陳慧敏的「一家主婦：女大學生憧憬當家庭主婦」、黃小星的「聆聽父親」、何嘉進的「我是你爸爸，你是我兒子」、曾美華的「家家有本難唸的經：年輕人眼中的家」、李文清的「童畫．童心」、謝碧珠的「私隱在家庭」、余梅玲的「走出家鄉，進入異鄉」、陳惠雲的「雙刃的劍：流動移民企業家的家和業」和龔卓琳的「香港新聞構建內地新移民家庭」。

 

為慶祝師生合作成功，他們早前舉辦了慶功晚宴。副校長（學術）陸大章表示，陳教授花精神、時間及心血與學生合作，一起思考社會問題，並把師生合作的學問研究成果出版成書，實屬難能可貴。

 

陳教授表示：「我希望通過出版，讓外界清楚知道浸大社會學系最頂尖的學生，有足夠的實力和世界任何著名大學媲美。我很珍惜與學生一起合作出版的機會，希望把師生合作模式代代相傳。」
